St. Mary’s Center opened in 1905 as part of the faith-based healing ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary. From just 38 patient rooms, the city’s first hospital has grown to 167 beds, with numerous expansions and renovations through the years. Today, nearly 1,300 employees and affiliated physicians carry on the mission.
St. Mary’s is a member of SSM Health Care, the first health care system ever awarded the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Services
Cancer Services:
The hospital is recognized as a regional, state-of-the-art cancer program, with on-site radiation therapy (including intensity-modulated radiation therapy), an outpatient cancer center, on-site MRI, PET/CT imaging and mammography, access to national clinical trials, a brand-new palliative care unit, and a large number of nationally certified oncology nurses—all in one centralized location.
Cardiovascular Services:
As the first hospital in Jefferson City to perform open-heart surgery, St. Mary’s offers skilled physicians and staff, as well as the latest technology, to ensure the highest level of comprehensive cardiac care in mid-Missouri, including open-heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac ICU, a nationally certified chest pain center and electronic ICU technology.
Emergency Services:
St. Mary’s Emergency Department has the largest group of full-time emergency physicians in mid-Missouri and treats more patients than any other ER in the area. The department is staffed with board-certified physicians and nurses trained in trauma, cardiac care, pediatrics, sexual assault, crisis intervention and other emergency procedures. The staff also supports a new Clinical Decision Unit for advanced patient monitoring and large-scale needs, and an urgent care center. ER staff consistently experience patient satisfaction in the top 10 percent nationally.
Orthopaedic Services:
From a brand-new sports medicine program, to a developing spine center, to rehabilitation programs that include speech, occupational and physical therapies, St. Mary’s orthopedic offerings are allowing patients to find a new path to healing and mobility.
Outpatient Surgical Services:
Key outpatient services are conveniently located near a suite of 15 spacious, private outpatient rooms. Also included are two mammography suites, special rooms for ultrasound, stereotactic imaging and a comfortable waiting area for patients and families.
Women’s Health Services:
Works to integrate programs for women within other key services designed specifically to meet the unique needs of women and recognize them as the decision makers of their families. The “Blessed Beginnings” program at St. Mary’s offers full-service obstetric, nursery and Level II nursery services to the members of our community.
Our Community
A town of about 50,000 people, Jefferson City prides itself in being not too big, not too small. It’s situated on a bend on the Missouri River, where the Missouri state capitol building rises majestically above towering riverside trees. State government is the largest employer, followed by a variety of service, distribution and manufacturing industries. The area has seen consistent growth and high employment.
Jefferson City is located in central Missouri, about two hours from either St. Louis and Kansas City, which offers two major airports, major-league sports and world-class performing arts. Just 45 minutes away is the Lake of the Ozarks, one of the Midwest’s premier vacation spots, with 1,150 miles of shoreline and 15 public golf courses.
The Jefferson City community places a premium on recreation and leisure time. The 225-mile Katy Trail, which is the nation’s longest rails-to-trail project, winds past the city, hugging the river and the colorful bluffs. The community also boasts 1,300 acres of parks and public facilities for swimming, golf, ice skating and hockey, roller skating, in-line skating, bowling, gymnastics, miniature golf, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, horseshoes, disc golf, wall climbing, trail walking and biking, racquetball, tennis, fitness, fishing and boating. An active cultural community offers theater, music and dance, as well as numerous art shows, festivals and fairs throughout the year. A new performing arts center opened in 2005 to host more cultural events.
